Spawning Behaivor

Spawning Behavior is very easy to determine in fish.  It normally occurs early in the morning, and lasts for a couple of hours.

Usually, the male fish will chase the female and bump her.  He will also "rub" his face against her backside to try and get her to release eggs.  This behavior, as best as I can determine, can happen anytime of the year.  Sometimes large WCs, change in temperature, cool or hot weather, and change in the atmospheric pressure outside can cause spawning behavior.

It is very important to watch your fish while the spawning behavior is going on.  Sometimes, the male fish can be too rough with the female and it is necessary to give her a break from him.  Using a divider in the tank, or floating a basket where she can rest inside are both options you can use.

***Male fish of certain varieties, have been known to kill females in certain circumstances, especially if there is more than one male in the tank and they are all partaking in the spawning.
