question about size of my tank
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:43:16 AM »
it appears that my tank has FINALLY cycled!!!!      I'm now ready to order my fish from rain garden, but I have a question...I am probably more interested in getting a more "common" goldfish than a fancy breed.  My tank is 30 gallons, though.  Are there any breeds that are not "fancy" that would be ok in that size tank?  A hibuna, Wakin, watonai, comet, or shubunkin?  From what I've read, those breeds seem to be more hardy than some of the fancy breeds who tend to have more health problems, but they also require more space.  If none of those breeds would be ok in my 30 gallon tank, then what breed of fancy goldfish seem to have the least amount of health problems (swim bladder problems, etc?)  I really want to get the proper fish for the size tank I have while still getting a fairly hardy, long lived fish.  Any thoughts or opinions would be great!  Thank you so much!!!!!   :-h

Not a comet or shubie. They need a lot more swimming space. Im sure someone else will comment about the others. I just haven't kept those so couldn't properly give advice on them. How exciting for you tho!!

I wouldn't put any of the ones you mentioned in a 30. Those fish get 10" easily and how long is that tank? 3 times the size of the fish? Hardly enough room to turn around don't you think?
Fantails are very pretty and not quite as fragile as some of the others. I'd say get whatever fancy you like and take care of it. The fish needs good care no matter what kind it is.

Very good point Bruce...I am going to get a fish that is more size appropriate for the tank and do right by it.  Thanks for the input!  :)

I have one common in a 50 gallon tank.  He was an inch long when the original owner got him but he is now the size of a small koi and actually looks too big for the tank.  :O

Yes they are definitely hardier than the fancies as their mutation is so minimal compared to the fancies.  He has never been under the weather ever in the almost 4 years I have had him.
