Anyone Having Technical Problems in the Forum?
« on: January 06, 2011, 11:26:23 AM »
For the past few days, I have been having some issues with AP.  Sometimes, I can't get in here at different times.  When I can get in here, it is taking a long time for my posts and replies to go through and I get timed out alot.  Anyone else having any issues? :[

:-h  I am right along with ya!  My biggest problem seem to be after replying to a post AP loads a blank page and says it is done.  I have had the same issues as you too though.  I don't know how many replies I have written and had them NOT post.  Erggg.

Also noticed this morning that if I go to AP on my cell phone I have a mobile site instead of the basic site.  Had that a while ago but then it dissapeared, now it is back!!

Yep, I have had that one, too.

Me too, but I thought it was my system. Have also noticed when I try to search for a word or phrase, I get a list of page 1,2,etc. but no way to get to that page. There's a pulldown on the right but nothing to indicate where the word or phrase actually occurs.

lol  That's intentional.     You can still log onto the full site from there though.  Just log out and you'll be given the option.

I didn't know about the SEARCH function acting up, thanks! I'm actually in the process of replacing that with a totally new one, so if you can be patient a little bit longer, that'll be rectified soon.  Thanks!!!

That's good to know Laura, since you mainly use Firefox and Nickie and I mainly use IE, that tells me it's not just an IE issue.  IE is more unstable than Firefox, but if both are acting up, that tells me it's a server issue and not a browser issue.  Thanks!

Yes, I few times now I have had difficulty entering the forum from the main page and then logging in either didn't work or took a long time. I thought it was my connection :[ I use IE with the inprivate filtering - maybe that does something? No issues today though.

No I don't ......... can't find the mobile site again.  I looked this morning and it was the regular page so logged out and back in and it does not give me any option of the type of page I want to use.

The site was really cool when I got to use it.

Probably just me.

Okay, are you WANTING to use the mobile site?  I'm confused.  lol

The way it's set up now is, the website server will detect whether you're on a mobile device or not.  If so, it will automatically direct you to the mobile website application.  From there, you can decide whether to login using the mobile application, or using the full site.  The options are at the very top of the page.

If you DON'T want the auto detection, you can enable/disable that in your profile settings.

If you WANT to use the mobile application, but your mobile device is NOT detecting it, and you HAVEN'T disabled it in your preferences, than all you have to do is clear the cache on your mobile device.  On an iphone I know how to do that, but not on any other mobile devices.   :[

Does that help any?

Just in case, we'll get with our hosting this month and see if there's anything we can do to make IE an Firefox's use of the website more stable.

Thanks for the input...keep it coming!!

Earlier in this thread Bruce mentioned that he is on a MAC and using Safari and not having technical issues.

Well tonight I got tired of waiting for the site to load AGAIN... so I downloaded Safari onto my laptop running Windows 7.  All I can say is that this is one lightning fast browser!!!  No issues and this site has never ran faster than it is on this browser!!!

I suggest anyone having issues to go ahead and download Safari and use it to access Aquapuppies (and any other website!!)

I've also logged in via the InPrivate option, April, didn't notice any difference than when I use regular IE.  I've heard good things about Safari too, but can't switch to it just yet since my Search & Rescue group just implemented an online response system that only works if you have IE. Like to try it on my husband's new laptop though,  & leave my PC as is for now. Is Safari shareware or do you have to buy it?

Safari is completely free. It's based in a rendering engine that Apple has open sourced called WebKit. Other browsers such as Konqueror and Google Chrome use it as well which means that many smart phone browsers are also using it.  Eg iPhone and android.

Good to know Kayjay thank you, curious about this Safari too can it run on a PC or is it just for Mac's? Don't know much about this sort of thing  :[

http://www.apple.com/safari/  (Mac+PC)
http://www.google.com/chrome (Mac+PC+Linux)

A nice thing about Chrome is that each tab runs independently from each other therefore is one crashes it doesn't affect the others.

Well although there are always browser options (still get a kick out of how the average person still doesn't realize there are many options to accessing the internet), reliable hosting options are very hard to come by.  The best connections aren't shared servers, but are also very expensive.  So we try to find the best shared servers out there, but they always become unstable after some time.  That's what we're experiencing now.

As soon as I can, we will move to a private server.  It's about $200 per month though, so not anything we can do right away.

In the meantime, IE, Firefox, Safari (and Chrome) are all options.....is there anybody still using AOL anymore?  lol

Wasn't AOL a service provider??  I guess I never realized that that was an Internet BROWSER as well.  How 'bout Netscape?  Remember that one?  Does that still exist??

The last remnants of Netscape Navigator were used to start Mozilla which eventually released Firefox.

Earlier I reported having problems with the Search function, but I used it just now & it gave me a list of 30 occurences with working links to each. I did have to refresh when trying to go back to the list after checking a link, but that's far better than not being able to access the list at all! If you changed something, thanks! If not, I'm still a happy camper! lol
still get a kick out of how the average person still doesn't realize there are many options to accessing the internet

Wonder if that's because Average People are too busy building houses, growing food, fixing cars, etc etc for the people whose working day is spent in front of a computer??

still get a kick out of how the average person still doesn't realize there are many options to accessing the internet

Wonder if that's because Average People are too busy building houses, growing food, fixing cars, etc etc for the people whose working day is spent in front of a computer??

Amen!  I don't know CRAP about computers and really, I don't care.  I know that computer knowledge is a great skill to have, but tell that to a mom who has not brought up an autistic child. lol

I don't think any of us here are saying that anyone here is stupid for not being computer "savey" ..... Just some of us spend much to much time working with this kind of stuff and have been "forced" into learning a lot of this as part of our jobs/lives.  Like me... I tutor at a college so I have to be up to date on all the new stuff -- or at least some of the new stuff -- just to do my job properly.

If any of you ever have questions feel free to PM me or start a thread and I will be happy to help in anyway I can.

I wish I had a job that did not involve a computer/keyboard/mouse that fills 90% of my day!!  I am sure it would bring my stress level down a lot if I were hammering nails all day..... or getting greasy in the garage!  I guess that is why those kind of things are my hobbies .... right behind fish!!

No Zooks, you have never made me feel stupid, but some have.  Personally, as long as I can use my computer for my writing, e-mail, and other trivial things, that is all I need it for.  I have learned a great deal about certain things on a computer from having been forced into at my jobs, but most of my jobs have been centered around customer service, so the computer part was usually someone elses job.

Well I'm not sure how long you've been out of the job market loop, but almost every job out there requires a computer these days.  Of course, I'm talking more on the user end, not repairing, building, or maintaining them.

It's a tech world nowadays...that's for sure.  Luckily for you though Nickie, applications like email, internet research and Microsoft Office are already in your arsenal, so I don't think you'd have any trouble at all fitting in in today's marketplace.

Although my most recent job centered around computer savviness, all the computer skills that I attained prior to that were self-taught.  When I went to school to get my degree in graphics art, it was only to get the official piece of paper. I already knew my way around computers and programs prior to that.

But let me tell you something, HAVING to use a computer to earn money, and PLAYING with the computer at home are two, completely different things. I HATE using the computer for work because it drives me crazy.   >:(   Between a sore back, carpal tunnel, and decreased vision, it's an awful way to spend the majority of your day.

I have learned that one of the best ways to learn the computer is just to play with them.  Open a program and just mess around with it and see what it can do.  You really can't hurt anything by doing that as long as you don't play in the major settings and I think Windows has gone back to hiding those kind of files by default.

I would love for computers to be just a "fun" part of life again.... everyday work on them and depending on them for work really suck.  There is nothing worse than knowing there is a ton of work to do but the  computer is not working or the network being down so you can't do your work!!  You can sit there all day and not get a darn thing done!!  That really sucks!  The computer related ailments really suck too!!

By the way TM... I found a pair of "computer glasses" that really relieve the strain on your eyes and make using a computer much more comfortable.  The only drawback is that the lenses are a yellowish/orange color.  You look funny, but the relief is so worth it!!  They also come in a variety of powers too if you need reading glasses.  I found them at my local Office Max store but I am sure other Office Supply Stores would carry them also.

Unfortunately I am continuing to have tech issues with the pages loading and logging in. Honestly I've given up quite a few times and just shut everything down. I'll have a look to see if I need any new updates I just updated my javascript and other programs are running smoother now.

Regarding the use of computers and deeper knowledge of them, I agree with playing in new program environments (if you have the time) and that has worked for me. Have an ancient version of photoshop that a classmate burned me back in 2000, but I basically taught myself over a year how to navigate thru it and the newer versions are built on older platforms so it is a continued learning experience if I ever come into enough money to purchase a newer copy of it. They are like 8 or 9 hundred dollars!  :O Lottery - please please please choose my numbers  ;-)

After using Safari for a day or so it too has started to have "issues" so I decided to download Google Chrome and that seems to be more stable.  I have been able to log in and explore the site often today with no issues but from the activity (or should I say Lack of Activity) on here today, I assume that others were having a lot of problems!

You can download Google Chrome here:  http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/landing_chrome.html?hl=en&brand=CHMB&utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-sk&utm_medium=ha

It is free and so far seems to be the most stable internet browser I have yet to use.

Thanks for helping out Laura!  My Safari is acting up too, so I'll go to that next, but either way, I gotta pay more for hosting to get better server access.  It's hard to keep these web forums up and running smoothly inexpensively without having your own server.

What issues do you have with Safari?  I wonder if it is because you are running it on MS machines, not apple.  I continue to have no issues with it.

I am having the same issues as I am with IE or FireFox... lag time and timing out when trying to post or reply to a topic and the occasional loading of black pages.  OH the other big issue is (in IE, FF, and S) is that I get told that AP is no longer an active website, that it is temporarily unavailable or that the site has moved.  That one was a bit of a scary message... kind of like the 404 error, but worse.  Mind you that if I hit the back button that I go right back to my previous AP page so I know it is not really "gone".

Google Chrome seems to be holding up pretty well.  It could be that Safari was built for a MAC and I am running on a MS machine, but I know I downloaded the MS version of it from the apple website. It seems as if it started acting up again after my computer did some more updates.  Could just be some incompatibility.  I don't really know.

It seems as if it started acting up again after my computer did some more updates.  Could just be some incompatibility.  I don't really know.

My machine is doing a lot of "security" updates as well. I do know that whenever our iphones update, applications start crashing because they either can't handle the extra load, or the updates deactivate the previous coded applications.

Incompatibility could very well be an issue.  I cringe everytime an update gets past me. I try to tell it not to when it says one is ready, but some of them are set up to automatically run.  I hate that!!!

Website coding can be very tricky like that.  My web design skills are a little behind the times, but I'm trying to keep up.  lol

Everything described above would point to a network issue.  Not your home networks or even your ISP's, but beyond that.

Tech'y BS:

It's not as easy to accurately analyze the trace routes since many networks block the requests, but some servers are responding quickly (www.google.com, www.ls1tech.com, www.youtube.com, www.akamai.com) and some like www.aquapuppies.com is timing out just beyond Comcast's backbone.  Even simple HEAD requests (like to this thread) are taking 2 seconds which may point to sluggish DB's or servers within the hosting companies network.

Yea... what Jason said!  Not that I understood (or need to understand) anything after "Tech'y BS:"  rofl

And I am not so sure that PCs "suck".... I know MACS are nice machines and have been around since the beginning, but the cost of them in comparison to a PC is ridiculous.  I know when I first learned how to run a computer and how to write programs (long time ago in DOS) we were running an Apple IIe and a MacIntosh.  (Yup my highschool had a computer programming course offered and we only had two computers to do our work on.  Take a guess at how much we learned.)   But most importantly not everyone has a lot of money to spend on a computer or laptops and the PC prices makes it affordable for the majority of the population.  That and most companies you would ever work for don't use MACS! If they are not running a Windows program they are using some other Industry specific software that runs on a PC platform anyway.

BTW,  Me thinks the server time is off by roughly 5 hours unless it always reports GMT which I don't remember it doing 'before'.

@zookey.  I'll agree that Macs are pricey and that has a lot to do with their limited customization.  The biggest difference between Macs and PCs that I have personally witnessed is that a Mac will last much longer than a PC.  Earlier this year I finally replaced an eight year old PowerMac with a MacBook Pro.   And by replaced I mean I put it downstairs to act like a jukebox.  It's still running.  The lack of frustration whilst using the Mac is crucial to me because I have a horrible tendency to smash things that refuse to work as advertised.   lol

Shared hosting.  'Nuff said.

We're going to upgrade tonight and see what we can afford to help alleviate some of the sluggishness.

BTW,  Me thinks the server time is off by roughly 5 hours unless it always reports GMT which I don't remember it doing 'before'.

That's a preference that each member has to make on their own...it doesn't always capture it on its own:

You know, I have a PC and I love it.  I don't have any other problems with any other websites except this one, so please don't blame it on my PC. lol  I also belong to other forums and they have more members than us and more active members and I don't have a problem with their forums.  I am sure that not every forum I have belonged to have an independent server and prolly used a shared server, just like AP.  Are we sure it is a server problem and not something else?

Nope.  It's the shared server.

Websites like these CANNOT be run on shared hosting servers.  I don't want to get over anybody's head here with technical terms, but there are certain reasons it makes it very difficult.  Activity is everything.  We've had a lot more activity on the site within the last month or so, which is why you're seeing intermittent issues. I promise you we are working on it.

P.S.
If everyone wants to chip in $20 per month, the problems will go away.

 rofl

I'm just kidding folks.  We are talking to the internet providers tonight.

You know, I have a PC and I love it.

I hate all of our PC's except for Ty's.  Actually, if I was using his computer instead of this dinosaur I'm on most of the time, I wouldn't be complaining at all.   lol

Here's what  he uses:

That computer rocks!!!   :) :)

However, for my graphic design programs, MACs are better.
