1,000 watt pond heater
« on: December 14, 2010, 06:38:31 PM »
Neighborhood Fish Farm in Miami sells this 1,000 watt heater. I wonder what it looks like? And how much it is. I'm guessing $250-300 range maybe?

I had an 800 watt one at one time... kept burning out the regulator. I think it was under 100 bucks tho.  AES sells them all sizes and prices. Some get pretty expensive.

I have a 1500 watt that I used in my pond once.  Worked well until I got my electric bill.

The heaters are only necessary for double tails. What did you have in your pond then Jason?

Ice. lol.

Unfortunately it had been extremely cold for a couple months.  We had single tails in there but we lost them.  That's why we always take the fish in and now enlarged and deepened the pond.  I'm still very nervous about leaving them outside next winte but I'll get to see what happens this winter while my little ones are safe and sound downstairs.

Jason.... You didn't say so I don't know if you had an  opening in the ice when you lost the single tails but it is necessary to allow the gases that build up to escape the water. Otherwise they suffocate in their own waste emissions.  We had Wakin and Koi in our small pond several years and never lost any, but we kept a hole in the ice using a tank heater some years and just air a couple of years. Our tank heater was 1300 watts and $$$$$$$ to operate so we tried the air stone near the surface and that worked too.

I know Bruce.  I had a 100 watt heater with the opening floating in the pond itself and the 1500 in the waterfall.  Before I added the 1500 watt heater the ice literally popped the 100 watt up but still maintained the opening.  What I didn't have was an air stone large enough to aerate te pond.  We never found those guys that first year.  I wasn't the only one who lost fish that winter.   It wasseriously cold.  I think it was 2002.

I seriously need to take a road trip when the weather warms up.  This place looks like so much fun:
