Mixing fish from two different locations?
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:35:28 PM »
Hello everyone! :) So I just had a quick question, and I hope this is in the right board, sorry if its not!

Okay well, I'm super excited right now because I get my first rain garden fish this Friday and I was wondering if I got him and then happened to get another goldie at a lfs like right after, would I have to QT them separately or could I just mix the two straight off since they are both new? (I'm not really planning on getting a second goldfish from the LFS but just in case.)

Thanks!
mollie

Short answer, YES...... keep them separated. They each have their own set of bugs/germs. and if you throw them together they may react to each other in an adverse way while in a weakened state because of the shipping.

I agree with Bruce, totally!  RainGarden fish are more healthy and more than likely, all your RG fish will really need is time to de-stress.  However, a LFS fish will have Lord only knows what all is wrong with it.  If you were getting two fish from the same place, then they could be QT together, but not when you are getting a really healthy fish and one that prolly has alot of bad things that need to be fixed (ie, bacterial probs, etc).

What fish did you get from RainGarden??  You know we all expect "adoption" pictures and lots of them.  (We will patiently wait while your new fish destresses before expecting you to do a full photo shoot though.) :)

I got this super pretty red/white ryukin, with a little bit of black in the tail. Tomorrow cannot come soon enough! And yes, I do will a major photo shoot once he settles. :) Now all I need to think of is a name for him. ;)

This is good info.  I'm new to goldfish keeping, and my first experience was VERY bad.  We brought home two goldfish, from two different LFS's on the same day.  We quickly realized one had some serious issues.  He infected the other and it all went very badly from there.  We armed ourselves with all the info we could and tried treating them, but ended up losing them both.  We actually euthanized one with clove oil, something I've never had to do before, when we realized he was too far gone and just couldn't watch him suffer anymore.  SAD, SAD, SAD.
