nesta laid an egg
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:57:49 AM »
So, Tosh has been chasing nesta around the tank all morning.  I went out to get some cat litter and I got back and there are like 5,000 eggs all over the tank bottom and on some rocks and stuff.  Maybe she won't sit on the bottom as much now that her "load" is emptied...

I bet she feels better!  I remember the first time Hammy dropped eggs, they were EVERYWHERE and she did it for about three days straight, too.  Talk about doing alot of wcs!!!! lol

Were any of the eggs yellow in color or clumped together?

Oh my gosh!!

That's so exciting!

Are you going to hatch any?

I'm so glad Nesta is empty. She must have felt so incredibly bloated. X.X

Sushi is going around eating up some of the eggs.  I'm just going to let nature take it's course, if some of them hatch, i will put them in a floating basket or whatever.  But i'm not going to separate eggs before they hatch.  There are no yellow clumped up eggs, does that mean they have been fertilized?

All the eggs are clearish-white

No, if the eggs had been yellowish and clumped, it would  have meant she was egg bound.  I'm glad she wasn't.  As for the eggs, you really need to do a wc if you are not going to save the eggs for hatching as they can pollute the water if left in there too long.  Also, fish can over-eat on eggs, too.

I am so happy Nesta dropped her eggs and that she wasn't egg bound!!  I hope she begins to feel better now that she has "lightened her load".  Must almost be like loosing a ton of weight when they lay that many eggs....... don't cha think?

It will be interesting to see how she acts now. Maybe she will start chasing the boys!

i was going to let them hatch and then put them in a breeding net in the tank until they were big enough to give to my friend in his pond.  Do you think i should just suck them up the python?  I am still considering what to do...i'll figure it out by tomorrow night i guess.  I want to let some hatch, but at the same time i don't.

Personally Tony, if I were you and still this new to goldfish keeping, I think I would just clean the eggs from the tank.  Believe me you will have many more chances to raise some fry if Nesta is such a fertile female!!  I think you may want to just worry about the adults for a while and maybe next spring when it has been awhile and you are use to the adult fishes, then maybe give a try at babies again.  AND it would give you some time to learn all you can about raising fry.

My largest problem would be the necessity of culling.  I don't think I could kill fry due to what seems like minor imperfections when they are cute little babies.  I know what looks minor in the beginning will be some real major issues later in their lives...... but I have a soft spot for the "unperfect"..  :)

It would be up to you but just make sure that your adult fish won't be made ill by you trying to let some of the eggs hatch. Like the over feasting, or have the eggs spoil and get fuzzy.  I don't know if it hurts a goldfish to eat fuzzy eggs..... but maybe someone else may know.

you are right, i will do a WC tomorrow and clean it off the rocks and plants.  I need to get an algae scraper to scrape the bottom of the tank off too.  My python doesn't suck all that well.  Thanks for the insight, i appreciate it.

Nesta seems to be doing fine.  Still bottom sitting as usual.  i put another bubble bar in the tank, at firat they were afraid of it.  now every once in a while they swim over top of it to get a nice belly massage.

as for nesta, she seems healthy despite the bottom sitting.  she laid eggs again today for the third time!!  i will have to clean them up again.  i wondef how many she has in there

Better she lay them, than to get egg impaction.  She may stop the bottom sitting once she has them all out.
