Gentle Euthanizing Methods

How to euthanize your terminal aquapuppy humanely.

None of us like to think about this, but there may come a day when we are all faced with having to put one of our beloved fish down.  There are two methods that I think are the best ways to euthanize.

1.  Clove Oil:
Clove oil is readily available at your local pharamcy and can be kept in your fish medicine cabinet.  It is an anesthetic.  Clove oil needs to be prepared the following way:
Mix 2-3ml of Clove oil with 8ml of vodka  (you can also just use the Clove Oil by itself at aprox. 10 drops per gallon).  Pour it into a clean bucket and add 1 gallon of tank water and stir gently.  Transfer your fish to the bucket and wait.  If you need to use a stronger mix, you can add more Clove oil but no more vodka, as alcohol can cause bleeding from the gills.  It causes minimal distress to the fish.  Make sure your fish is dead before removing it from the bucket; no response to touch, no gill movement.

2.  You can also take your fish to a fish vet and have them humanely put down.  This is a good option, but not available to everyone as fish vets are few and far between for most of us.

If you have questions about disposal of your fish, please see our forum on this called "Proper Disposal" at www.aquapuppies.com/aquapuppies/index.php?board=25.0
