Eggs?
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:23:32 PM »
I found some eggs in my tank that were attached to the fake plants. My first thought was my snail but i thought they lay their eggs in clusters above the water line? In that tank I have some goldies, a snail, a pleco and an upsidedown catfish. Any idea who's eggs they may be?

OMG REALLY!?!?! I didnt even know they were old enough to spawn? I also didnt know they stuck to things...How can I found out which one laid them? Could that be why my water is cloudy as well? I thought i was having a bac bloom.

You prolly won't know which one had them until after the babies get bigger and you see which fish they look like.  If you want to keep them, remove them from the tank and put them in a seperate tank, as GF will eat them and the babies when they hatch.

Yes, milt will make your water cloudy! lol  I've been dealing with that myself!

How do I remove them? I dont even know if they are fertilized...some are clear and some are milky white. The only other tank I have is a little 1g with a sponge filter? How do I get the eggs off without deconstructing my tank pretties? I dont want to go through the trouble of relocating unfertile eggs...

The milky ones are not any good.  The clear ones have a shot at hatching.  If you want to remove them, you will have to remove the plant they are on.  Touching them will prolly destroy them.  Do any of them seem to have any black spots in them yet?

I wish I could be of more help, but I don't keep the eggs, so I have no idea what to do for them.  I do know they need a heater.

I put the leaf clippings in the 1g with water from the big tank in it. I also added some more foliage for hiding spots. Only one egg looked hopeful...i swear I saw eyes and a spine.

What do you think?

Here's Georgia's stars:

I dont know if they make heaters small or safe enough for a 1g plastic tank do they?

Yep, you def got a baby fishie in that egg!!! :)  As for heaters, they make one called a Hydor mini heater.  It is for 2g and up and may be okay for the 1g.  It only raises the room temp by a few degrees.  I used one in my 1.5g betta tank and it was okay.

And Yup, Georgia is a boy!  He has gorgeous stars!!!

I ended up just getting one of those breeder containers that sit in the bigger fishtank. The tank stays a pretty even temp and I dont have to worry about multiple w/c's. I put the leaf in there so hopefully the rest will work itself out.

I put the breeder box floating at the top of my tank but it has the vents in the side...wont the baby swim or get sucked right out? So stressful! I wanna do the best I can for my first new little baby!

If there are spaces big enough for it to swim out of, then yes, it will.  You may want to put it in a container by itself.

buy the cheap knee high nylons --- I use them when I want to establish a new tank  or for the breeder box (wasn't used for breeding though)

I also use them when my daughter gets poison ivy (oatmeal baths) -- put the oatmeal in the stocking and tie it off, use it like a sponge, you get the benefitt of an oatmeal bath without trying to keep the oatmeal from clogging your drain.  (oops sorry off topic)

When you do do water changes make sure to move your breeder box into a container of tank water...... otherwise the waterline in the tank will drop and your poor baby will be left high and dry at the top of your tank.  (My breeder box attaches to the side of the tank to hold it in place.)

Good luck with the baby...... and GEORGia is a beautiful fish!

Given how developed she is in the egg how long ago do you thing the eggs were laid? I see eyes and a little spine. I dont know how long the whole process is...or how long I have till she hatches...if she hatches at all. She looks so delicate and breakable in there it amazes me how they survive that stage at all.

I think once you can see them inside the egg, it does not take long to hatch, maybe a day?  Hopefully, someone else will have more info!

I lost my baby last night! *(

I was transfering her to a smaller container and she somehow splashed into the big tank and I cant find her! I'm hoping she maybe found shelter in a leaf near the surface...i keep looking for her and i am going to keep dropping first bites in there just in case.... *( *( *(

Yeah check the filter boxes!!  Some one here not too long ago had "filter fry", but I can't remember who.

Jim (cbudz)?  It may have been him.  My friend Kaida found some in her pond filter a while back, too, I believe.

Reading this thread made me sad all over again. None of my fish have laid eggs since then, i still dont know who laid them. That would have been awesome to have the ONLY baby from my fishies first spawning.

George (aka Georgia) has "dirtied" my tank a few times since then but no more eggs.

I have my betta in there so I keep my temps in the high 70's and I do 50% wc's at least once a week. It kind of worries me though, cause arent females supposed to lay eggs at least once a month? She hasnt laid any since December!

GF will lay eggs when their surroundings are just right...temps, water-quality, food, space, health of fish all have to be put in consideration...

So my little fubar on this:
http://www.aquapuppies.com/aquapuppies/index.php?topic=3291.msg30761#msg30761

Helped with my spawning issue. The change in water temps triggered spawning :) I managed to steal a couple eggs and put them in my 1g...just to see if they will hatch.

I fished some out and put them in my little 1g, if any of them make it enough to grow then I will set my 20g up and figure it out from there.

I put them in a 1g tank then found a 1.77g tank that i used for qt once. I rinsed it out good and put them in there...and they dissolved.  *(  There might still be one or two left in the 1g that i didnt see when i was tranferring so i am going to let it sit a couple days and see if i have fry.

Lesson learned.

Yeah, i think the chemicals that were in the tank from the qt were still in there, i think it comprimised the outer layer. Here are some before and after pics. The second pics of the eggs were taken less than an hour after putting them in the tank.

The egg is very fragile..the outer membrane is very soft and will dissolve for many reasons...
