WS3- White Spot and other parasite med.- Acriflavine, Malachite Green & Quinine sulphate

TAP Aquarium Doctor Products- Mainly for Ponds, but should be able to dose for the aquarium. A leading name in aquatic medications and water treatment.  They do:

Formulin Gold- A very powerful medication effective against most external protozoa and monogenetic flukes (skin and gill parasites). This fish medication is even more effective when used in conjunction with Malachite Gold. This superior grade of Formalin is 40% strength and is guaranteed paraformaldehyde free.

Malachite Gold- A very effective treatment against aquatic parasites, fungi and some bacterial infections. For optimum effect with this product use in conjunction with Formalin Gold. This product is of Medical quality and is totally Zinc and Cadmium free. (WARNING- heavily influenced by the water hardness, pH, temperature and amount of dissolved oxygen in water. Detailed studies have indicated that the toxicity of the chemical increases as the temperature increases or pH decreases. High doses or frequently repeated dosing can damage the gills of the fish.)

BSB Bacteria Cure - Acriflavine, Hydrochloride & Malachite Green
One of the most effective medications on the market today. Use for both Marine and Freshwater to treat Fin Rot, Body Rot, Wounds, Ulcers and General Disorders. Safe to use on Invertebrates, Plants and fish. BSB can be used as a tonic to treat the aquarium after disease has occurred. Even in overdose conditions BSB will not harm Biological Filtration.

WSP White Spot Cure- Formaldehyde, Malachite Green, Methylene Blue, Para Rosaniline & Sodium chloride.  Use WSP to eradicate white spot fast. WSP will also eradicate Parasites in both the Marine and Freshwater environment. WSP will eradicate Velvet (Oodinium, Amyloodinium), Flukes (Gyrodactylus, Dactylogyrus) and Protozoans (Chilodonella, Ichthyobodo, (Costia), Trichodina, Brooklynella).

FC Fungus Cure - A very advanced cure for all types of fungus, Fin Fungus, Body Fungus and Mouth Fungus (Flexibacter species). Wasting disease can also be successfully treated and controlled, this manifests itself as lethargic or listless behaviour in live bearers (Guppies, Swordtails, Neons etc), which can lead to multiple deaths.

NT Labs- Again, for the pond trade, but I should think that you will be able to adjust the dose for the aquarium.

Formaldehyde- 30% solution. Effective against protozoan parasites and flukes. It is especially useful in treating flukes because of its ability to penetrate mucus and reach the parasites that would otherwise be protected from other bath treatments. Formaldehyde can be used as a dip bath to treat severe cases quickly.
WARNING- Formaldehyde is a hazardous chemical and should be handled with great care, please read the warnings on the label carefully. Formaldehyde 30% is especially low in methanol and thereby less toxic in use.

Potassium Permanganate - Powerful antiseptic and anti-parasitic agent. It can be used either as an impressive bath treatment at 2 ppm (10-12 hour treatment) or as a 10 ppm (30 minute dip). Also used as a swab to clean ulcers, Argulus (fish lice) and Lernea (Anchorworm).

Aquarium Bactocide- Acriflavine, Aminoacridine, Hydrochloride & Formaldehyde
 For fin-rot, tail-rot, ulcers and flukes. http://www.ntlabs.co.uk/UserFiles/File/bactocide.pdf

Aquarium Care- fin rot- Acriflavine, Aminoacridine, Hydrocloride & Formaldehyde Used for Flukes and external bacterial infections in Freshwater tropical and coldwater fish.

Dactymor- fresh water fish against skin worms (Gyrodactylus), gill worms (Dactylogyrus) and tapeworms (Cestodes). Aquarium Münster succeeded in making the well-known ingredient Praziquantel soluble in water. (heavy water changes needed though)

Kusuri

Kusari Fluke M-. Flubendazole, and is the only legally obtainable form of this available in the UK. (under the small animal exemptions scheme). Can be used at any temperature, and is a one off treatment. Can be used with all coldwater ornamental fish, quite expensive as it is primarily for ponds. 65g treats 5500 gallons.

Pond Anti White Spot uses a unique new treatment enhancer called Procell TM that allows easy passage of the active ingredients through the white spot cell wall. ProcellTM makes the treatment more effective allowing safer levels of active ingredients to be used.

Anti Ulcer is a unique patented formulation, which treats fish that are suffering from systemic bacterial infections. Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Vibrio bacteria can quickly overcome fish causing the classic symptoms of:
• Ulcer sores on the body of the fish – this is the most common symptom.
• Dropsy - where the fish’s scales stick out like a pinecone - or the belly of the fish can become hollow as the fish becomes emaciated.
• Pop eye - where fishes eyes swell and stick out.
• Bacterial gill disease - which will cause the fish to breathe very rapidly. _ In very acute cases the fish may die before showing any obvious external symptoms. Anti Ulcer is a 2 dose treatment. Each product treats the volume stated for a full course of 2 doses.

Ingredients Used in U.K. Fish Medicines

This is a list of some ingredients used in U.K. fish medicines.  It includes what the medicine is used for, warnings, and some disavantages of using the medicine.  This is an on-going list, so if you have any other ingredients that you would like to have added, please contact an admin!  Thanks to Claire for shring this list and her research with us!

Acraflavine

To be used for fungal infections on fish and eggs and to treat parasites (Ichthyobodo, Chilodonella)
Non aggressive treatment for bacterial disease and good for healing wounds, as well. Also supposed to be a good cure for dropsy when used with Epsom salt. For Dropsy use at 4 x strength with Salt at 1 ounce per gallon.

Disadvantages-
Discolours the water and plastic products. Kills live plants. Believed to cause infertility in fish, Guppies in particular. At high doses can affect the filter, but wont harm the fish.
There are better substitutes available. Yellow colour can be removed using carbon.

Malachite Green

!Caution!- Harmful to humans

Especially used in the treatment of white spot (although salt is less stressful for the fish). Especially effective against unicellular parasites on the skin and gills.  Also used to treat fungal infections on fish or eggs.

Disadvantages-
May be toxic, especially to the gills at higher temperatures or at a low Ph. In particular toxic to scale less fish (Weather loaches, Botia) and Salmonids/Tetras. For these fish 1/3 to max half dose is recommended in combination with Formalin.

!WARNING!- heavily influenced by the water hardness, pH, temperature and amount of dissolved oxygen in water. Detailed studies have indicated that the toxicity of the chemical increases as the temperature increases or pH decreases. High doses or frequently repeated dosing can damage the gills of the fish.

Formalin

!Caution!- Toxic, and can cause damage to live plants.

Very effective against most parasites on the skin and gills. Also used to treat fungal infections on eggs, but not to be used during the last few days before the larvae hatch.

Disadvantages-
DO NOT use at temperatures below 12-13 degrees Celsius and keep it for a short period.
Formalin will kill weak fish and filter bacteria.  During treatment, aquarium MUST be well aerated.
If Formalin has a milky appearance it contains para formaldehyde, which is extremely toxic to fish. It is recommended to store Formalin in a dark place at more than 4 degrees Celsius. (Room temperature is best)
Preferable to buy a fresh product to use in a short period.
Formaldehyde can cause damage to plants.
**Notes From Doc Johnson:
"Don't expose any fish to Formalin for more than one hundred and twenty minutes. Use half dose for Goldfish. That means you'd only use 25 PPM for one hundred and twenty minutes then do a massive water change."

Methylene Blue

Used for treating fungal infections in fish eggs and commonly used as a preventative.

Disadvantages-
Toxic to aquarium plant life, as well as nitrifying bacteria. Methylene Blue should not be used for prolonged exposure, or in permanent (main, display) systems as it can/will kill off necessary beneficial bacteria. Not useful for disinfecting nets or spare tanks.

Methylene Blue can be safely mixed, added with other dip/bath compounds... it has no synergistic or antagonistic property with any known chemical used for aquarium medicine

!Caution! – Can kill all filter bacteria.

Potassium Permanganate

One of the best bactercides available  but can be expensive. Powerful oxidizer clears many ciliated protozoans, flukes, fungi and bacterial infections.

Disadvantages-
Dosage and interval are critical. Use caution and dose carefully, avoid contact with skin, eyes or mucous membranes. Bypass filter and increase aeration and circulation. Can be neutralized with dechlorinator or hydrogen peroxide.
Will kill 99% of bacteria, but this also includes beneficial bacteria, so will kill the filter.

Can be used at most temperatures and will clean up wounds and reduce bacteria count.

!Cautions!
At 4ppm and more it is toxic to fish. Once added to the system, PP oxidizes organic material, and parasites, and bacteria, into harmless particles, and manganese dioxide, which is a brown precipitate. It is recommneded that you execute a massive waterchange and re-start the filter as soon as you let the water turn brown. That is, the water should be kept pinkl or wine colored by repeated application of PP until ten hours has elapsed, then a massive waterchange is undertaken to remove the suspended brown oxidized debris.
This material is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. It is also harmful if absorbed through the skin.
Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent and may react very exothermically with organic materials.
PP can stain the skin and other objects.
Small amounts of very dilute potassium permanganate solution can be flushed down a sink with a large quantity of water, unless local rules prohibit this. More concentrated solutions and waste solid should be retained for disposal by those in charge of the laboratory.

Aminoacridine

This is what I could find on this:
A highly fluorescent anti-infective dye used clinically as a topical antiseptic and experimentally as a mutagen, due to its interaction with DNA. It is also used as an intracellular pH indicator. (http://www.online-medical-dictionary.org/9+Aminoacridine.asp?q=9+Aminoacridine)
Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin. May act as an irritant. (http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/AM/9-aminoacridine_hydrochloride.html)
