Not sure if this is the right place, !

It is the Festival of Fishkeeping 10-12th October and I cant wait. I went last year very last minute, (left home at 10pm on the friday, festival sat and sun, back sun night!), this year I am planning a bit further ahead.

I gave my holiday request into work last week, and they have lost it, hmm, figures. So will be speaking to them on Monday, but no matter what they say, I am going!

I had so much fun last year, and met up with some UKers from another forum, who I might stay with again this year, share the room cost!

They have a goldfish open show, talks, stands, other fish- tropical, discus etc etc. And great offers on products, I will be taking more money this year. I would like to buy some fish, but cant as they would not appreciate the train journey back! (6-7 hours depending)

It is great. I have booked my hotel room, just booking the train now. Quite a few of us going now, about 10, so should be good. I love the freebies!!

I will be taking lots of pics throughout the weekend, so that should keep you all occupied!

Just booked my train, what a pain that was! It seems to be the weekend with the most engineering work on the lines!! therefore it will take me 2 hours longer to get back, and no seat reservations allowed! Just my luck. (apologies off topic I know!)

This year is special for the goldfish and they are bringing stock over from China!!! O I so know I will want to buy some now, will have to enquire on shipping back to mine! . I am so going to be broke by the end of the weekend, sounds a lot better than last years and I thought that was amazing. And this year I will be there as soon as it opens!

, I probably wont get any new fish as I have no room, unless I win a new tank!!
But I suppose if I saw a dream fish, like a solid blue with nice wen, or solid black, then I may seriously consider. I would like a Tosakin (sp?), but my tank isnt suitable, as I have heard that they prefer less deep than mine and bigger space for their tail to grow properly, but they are pretty and rare here. Jikins are nice, but look a bit funny to me! I think I will stick to my puppy looking orandas!

(I bet Im annoying you wll now with my festival talk!)

Are you kidding?!?  I am SOOOO jealous!!!  I wish we had something like that around here.  I think I will check and see if there will be one in Atlanta this year.  Talk away!!!!  It is nice for those of us who can't go to something like that to still be able to share in the experience of it!!!

O right, I know the GSGB is ok, I met them last year and the secretary rang me the other night.
I really want the book of national standards, just to read really. I  see fish at shows and think, why did that one win when that one looks better, . Plus you get other stuff, so should be interesting. Was only Ł12 for the year so not bad.

If people didn't break the rules and create new "forms" we would all still have carp in our tanks.  (I mean the natural freak carp that had turned orange naturally)

Do they even have events like this in the US???  I have never heard of such a thing, but then again I am still REALLY new to the whole "Keeping Goldfish the RIGHT way".

They do.  You can go to the American Goldfish Association website and I think they post a list of events by state???   I can't remember...

Yes, there are way more over there than here. If you do a quick google search such as goldfish shows in .... then add your state, it should come with something. There are more tropical and such shows though, and combined ones.
Worth attending, even at local level. Nickie did you have a look at one near to you?

No.  I wanted to, but I didn't have the time.  I hope to go to at least one this year, but may have to wait until next Spring.

There is a show about 2 hours from me in Oct. (Fanning, FL) I'll probably ride up there and see whats up. It should be a much shorter ride for ultimateOrandaLover.

I've never been to a show. Who knows I may even find something irresistable to bring home with me!

Shows are great, and you get to meet like minded people, some are even madder than us!
And you have to be restrained when there are auctions!!

We took Bruiser, Sparkle, Jethro and Buttah. Tank 18 Everyone but Sparkle won an award. And even though she didn't win she got a lot of ohhs and ahhs cause she'd just such a pretty fish. Jethro won the most coveted trophy on the table. The Chairman's Choice. We took some pics of it once we got it home and put in its "place of honor".

Thank you so much for posting the pictures Lari!  I so regret not getting to go...... but this is an annual event right?  Is it always in Minneapolis/St Paul?  Maybe next year!  Did you have any issues with trafic and detours?  I couldn't believe the amount of construction down there!

Your fish are amazing and those other butterfly Koi ....... so pretty! 

That Trophy is amazing!  But what do you expect..... an amazing trophy for an amazing fish!  Congrats again!

Congratulations!  I'm glad you are able to enjoy your fish like this.  So many of us aren't able to have the priveledge of living close to any GF show circuits.

The Minneapolis show has only been being done for 3 years now. Always at Bachmanns Greenhouse in Minn.
The construction was 'there' but overall we didn't hit any real snarl ups.  I did share the link you sent me with others travelling to the show too, and the site was helpful to Bruce. Thanks.

Oh and the road that was closed when you were there was open now, but the exit to our Motel was not. Mapquest took us around all the right ways anyway.

Oh and with PKorf's wife and daughter, I got a chance to see a little bit of Mall of America on Saturday. We also toured the aquarium exhibit there..its awesome... they gave out $5.00 off tickets while we were in the food court so we got in for $15.00 adult...I don't remember what the child ticket was. Anyway we went through it twice. Pretty neat to see! They have some HUGE fish...sharks, rays, Turtles and others.. and an elaborate Seahorse collection too.

The Mall of America is a pretty awesome place and the Under Water World is (in my opinion) the best part of the entire place!  I am glad you enjoyed your time here!

Bruce.... I have to agree, Chicago HAS to be the WORST city for construction! (and heavy traffic) Very happy the Twin Cities didn't win that contest for you this year!

So how many fish did you go home with that you didn't come with??  (I assume that is where the money was spent...   )

Zooks.... Lari found two koi in the auction that we brought home... ironic in that we are trying to get rid of about half our kio.  I bought a shade sail and 4 inch valve at auction.... and of course, being at a garden center Lari couldnt resist a sale on orchids and a bunch of ground cover plants that she hadnt seen around here.

They are discussing when the show will be next year. Apparently previous years it was in August and just too hot in the greenhouse they use at Bachmanns. This year in September it was still pretty warm in there much of the time, but apparently much better than in the past overall. They are asking if Labor Day weekend would work for people.

Since our job situations recently changed with the sale of the nursing home we work at, we just can't say what will work for us until Bruce gets a fair idea of his schedule. He's going to continue working at the same site with the new company. I'm moving offices and will remain employed by our old employer. Change of hands takes effect October 1st.
